West
Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District
Locally
Led Conservation
Our
motto is: "Locally Led Conservation." This encompasses many
activities and objectives. West Multnomah SWCD is involved in conservation
planning, watershed assessment, education and enhancement projects.
We invite ideas and
comments from our community members to further this work.
Conservation Planning
We contact local landowners, neighborhood groups, schools, businesses,
government agencies and others to better understand local conditions and
concerns. We help develop watershed plans. We facilitate communication within
the community on conservation issues.
Assessment &
Monitoring
We research the
dynamics of watersheds to help improve watershed
health.
Education
We sponsor educational programs on conservation issues. We work with schools
and other agencies to raise awareness about conservation.
Projects
We facilitate watershed conservation and restoration efforts throughout the
West Multnomah District. We work with land owners to help them develop and
implement plans to conserve and restore natural resources on their property.
Current &
Recent Projects:
Tryon Creek Watershed
Assessment Project: Tryon Creek is federally
listed for endangered Steelhead and has been designated substandard for
temperature by the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The primary purpose of the Assessment is to
define limiting factors for fish, and provide recommendations for species
improvement and recovery. Contact West
Multnomah SWCD at 503-238-4775x101 for more information. This is an Oregon Watershed Enhancement
Board funded project.
Landowner Technical
Assistance Project: We have a conservation planner on staff to
provide direct assistance to landowners for developing Conservation Plans for
their properties.
Equine
Turnout Demonstration Project: This experimental
project is a test of methods to reduce erosion and damage to streams caused
by horses. The project included
several variant approaches, tours of the facility, and workshops showing the
results of the project. This
demonstration project is located at Shadysprings
Farm on NW Rock Creek Rd.
Roadside Erosion Control Tours: Director Brian Lightcap invited
transportation agency staff from five counties and the City of Portland to tour and
discuss 12 different transportation department projects. The Oregon Department of Transportation,
and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife also participated. For more information, contact Brian
Lightcap at brian @ westmultconserv.org.
Sturgeon Lake/Dairy Creek: In about 1990 a cooperative project of West
Multnomah SWCD, landowners, the Department of Fish & Wildlife, the
Department of Environmental Quality and the US Army Corps of Engineers was
conducted to dig a channel from Dairy Creek to Sturgeon Lake. The purpose of the channel is to increase
water circulation to Sturgeon
Lake via Dairy Creek to
reduce sedimentation in the lake and improve habitat for salmon and migratory
birds. During and following the flood
of 1996, Dairy Creek has become blocked and silted in. Proposals are currently being discussed for
further action on Dairy Creek and Sturgeon
Lake. West Multnomah SWCD currently holds
approximately $70,000 in reserve for maintenance on this project. For more information contact West Multnomah
SWCD at 503-238-4775x101 or email brian @ westmultconserv.org.
